How accurate are AI calorie estimates?
AI calorie estimates are drafts, not lab measurements. They are usually close enough on a single, fully visible food and can be materially wrong on mixed dishes, hidden oils, sauces, breading, and portions the camera cannot see. Review every result and edit it before you save.

How to use ChatGPT to plan meals and AskCalories to log them
ChatGPT is useful for meal ideas, grocery lists, and rough calorie targets. It is a weak daily food diary because chat history is not a meal log you can edit against today’s targets. Plan with ChatGPT if you like; log what you ate in AskCalories with a photo or description, then review and edit the estimate before saving.

Best calorie tracker without a subscription
If you want a mobile calorie tracker you can download without paying first, AskCalories lists a free Offer (price 0 USD). No signup form is required. The app creates a device-bound account during onboarding so it can save and sync your entries. It estimates meals from a photo or description with an edit-before-save step. It does not include barcode scanning, so barcode-first packaged-food logging still belongs in another app.
