Calorie tracker for weight loss

Use this guide to plan what you want to track for weight loss. AskCalories can estimate a meal from a photo or description, but the result is an editable estimate rather than a measurement or medical recommendation.

Why tracking actually helps here

  • A 500 kcal/day deficit produces ~1 lb/week of fat loss — sustainable, not crash territory
  • Most people underestimate intake by 30–50% without tracking. Tracking is the reality check.
  • Macro awareness (protein especially) preserves muscle while you lose fat
  • Weekly trends matter more than daily numbers — tracking gives you the trend line
  • You can't fix what you can't see; tracking turns vague goals into measurable progress

How AskCalories helps

  • Photo meal estimates

Choose a meal photo and AskCalories estimates the visible foods, portions, calories, and macros for you to review.

  • Text and speech-to-text

Describe a meal in chat by typing or using the microphone, then send it for an editable nutrition estimate.

  • Editable calories and macros

Correct the meal name, serving count, calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber before the entry is saved.

Recommended setup

Daily deficit
500 kcal
Protein target
0.8–1g per lb body weight
Carbs
40–50% of calories
Fat
25–30% of calories
Weigh-in
Daily, same time

Tips that actually help

  • Log before you eat, not after

Logging before the meal anchors your day's budget. Logging after invites the 'I\'ll skip this one' rationalization.

  • Aim for 80% adherence, not 100%

Perfect logging is a trap that leads to binge cycles. 80% adherence (5–6 days/week of accurate logging) produces better outcomes than 100% intent and 50% reality.

FAQ

What can AskCalories analyze?
AskCalories can estimate calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber, and portion size from a meal photo or a written description. AI estimates are not measurements, so review and edit them before saving.
Can I use voice input?
Yes. Tap the microphone in chat to transcribe what you ate, review the text, and send it. Voice input requires an internet connection and is not a background or hands-free mode.
Can I correct an estimate?
Yes. Before saving a meal you can edit its name, category, serving count, calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber.
What progress does the app show?
The Today view compares logged calories and macros with your daily targets. Progress includes 7- and 30-day calorie and protein charts plus the number of days logged.
Does AskCalories replace a dietitian or medical device?
No. AskCalories provides estimates for general nutrition awareness. Do not use AI-estimated nutrition for medication dosing or as a substitute for professional medical guidance.
Do I need to create a named account?
No signup form is required. The app creates a device-bound account during onboarding so it can save and sync your entries.
